MEDIA ART CURATING FORUM FOR REGIONAL GALLERY, MUSEUM & LIBRARY PROFESSIONALS

Experimenta has received funding from the Visual Arts Board of the
Australia Council to deliver a series of forums over the next two years to
foster media arts curating and collecting in regional and rural areas.
Video installations, interactive artworks and multimedia are now part of
mainstream contemporary visual arts and growing in popularity but the
question of how artworks should be programmed into exhibitions and added
to collections is one still being asked by regional gallery, museum and
library professionals.

Experimenta, Australia’s powerhouse of Media Art, has been successfully
touring exhibitions of innovative contemporary artworks since 1986.
Experimenta’s exhibitions appeal to a broad cross-section of people,
attracting thousands of visitors and developing new audiences for
contemporary art.

At most venues the forums will be held alongside the national tour of
Experimenta Playground. Starting this year, Experimenta will be working
closely with host venues, local specialists, NETS, state-wide arts
organisations and local regional arts development officers to develop and
promote a series of free half-day media art curating events. The first
will be hosted by Performance Space at CarriageWorks in Sydney in early May.
Other venues in 2008 include the Western Plains Cultural Centre, Dubbo on
2 June, The Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art, Adelaide on 29 August and
the WA Museum, Perth in November. In 2009 venues include Bendigo Art
Gallery and Albury Library Museum.

This project is assisted by the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an
initiative of the Australian, state and territory governments

more than a moment to transform our lives forever. A soccer star, Jose,

25::WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

In conjunction with the retrospective Lawrence Weiner: AS FAR AS THE EYE
CAN SEE, at the Whitney Museum through February 10, this series provides a
rare opportunity to see the substantial body of work Weiner has produced
in film and video from 1970 to the present. For Weiner the making of film
and video, like his posters, books, and records, reflects his interest in
art being democratic and part of the larger world. In Weiner's films the
actors are friends rather than professionals, and appear in multiple
films. The series includes his early videos made for the Gerry Schum
television exhibition, shot by the sea, and videos made and shown at
Castelli Gallery, in which actions demonstrate stated possibilities for
the work to be made.
